Ty's Story...written by Ty Belnap
Hing Ang PhotographyHi, my name is Ty Belnap and I have been selected to represent Australia at the World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Albufeira, Portugal, November 27th – December 4th, 2008.

I have represented Queensland at four Special Olympics National Games. I have also had the honour to represent Australia at two other Down Syndrome World Championships in South Africa and Ireland. I have been swimming competitively for 15 years.

I train at Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre in Maroochydore swimming 8 sessions a week. I also swim with the Sunshine Coast Masters and have recently set 13 Masters World Records for swimmers with Down Syndrome.

I have been an active member of Mooloolaba Surf Club since 1997, being the first person with Down Syndrome to achieve the Bronze Medallion and am currently an IRB crewman on patrols.

I work at Kawana Shopping World 3 days a week as a cleaner and volunteer 1 day a week at Caloundra Community Kindy.

I was very fortunate to successfully represent my country in Portugal. I swam personal bests in all but one race. I won 5 world championship medals: 2 bronze, 2 sliver and one gold where our medley relay team broke the world record.

I am very much involved in power yoga and am enjoying retirement from competitive swimming and have now taken up tennis as my sport.
