Sunday, January 18th, 2009 Sharing the Joy!
![]() This year I have decided not to let the negativity that has embraced the media world affect my plans. As recently as last week I was entertaining thoughts of taking on a part-time or full-time job to help "recession proof" my lifestyle. I have decided that photography is my lifestyle now and anything that takes me away from that will not sit well with me. I am planning a number of different projects that will diversify my business and one of them is sharing the joy of photography with people new to it. I have partnered with another photographer and the local Camerahouse store to offer a range of photography courses designed for amateaur and noobie photographers. Today I had the pleasure of taking some lovely ladies through the very basics of SLR camera operation and I had a ball doing it. The course we have developed involves a sit down session where we take students through the various buttons etc on their cameras and then a few days later (after they have had some time to practice) we take them on a location shoot and do some practical photography activities. The courses are very popular so far and we are working hard to make the next courses available soon. If you'd like to learn more or sign up for the next class click here. Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 Happy New Year!
Other than a few portrait jobs here and there photography has been pretty slow. This time last year was virtually dead so I went on Holidays into the deserts of WA and the coastline of South Western Australia. This year I have been using the down time to re-develop my website, right my Ebook and develop some courses in photography for beginners. I am in essence, diversifying my business and what it offers. I have also had the chance to practice some new techniques in photography and digital compositing. In amongst all that, my search for "darkscapes" continues. I've learned that a very important part of my darkscapes is my mood. I've learned that, while I can employ the techniques and processes involved in creating a darkscape to any image I take...it doesn't always "feel" or "look" like a genuine darkscape. I've found that I need to feel completely alone (no tourists wandering around in the distance). I need to be a little bit bored (because it makes me look harder for something interesting) and most importantly, I need to be a little bit sad and reminiscent...not just when I take the picture but when processing as well. ![]() The image above is worth mentioning. There were none of the normal indications that the sunset was going to be spectacular so I was very surprised when the last rays of the day did this. This image is a two image stitch HDR. Saturday, November 8th, 2008 Boatshed Shoot
Thank you to Robyn, Rika and Maree for inviting me to come and photograph a very special Birthday Party. The location was the super-chill axin' venue "The Boatshed" at cotton tree. Man..this place has day beds and comfy couches under a jungle gym of a cotton tree! Gemma and I visited the day before to scope the joint and make sure we had powerpoints for the flashes to be used for the group shot. A big thanks to Francis and the boss of the Boatshed for helping out with that. Also, a big thanks to the universe for holding back on the inevitable rain storm.
I decided to shoot from an elevated angle (large step ladder) and used a 150 Watt Glanz studio kit light on a boom (held by Gemma high and left). Flash slaved to SB600 on manual full power and wide angle diffuser.
![]() Shot with Nikon D200 and the Sigma 10-20mm lens. Colour adjusted and lens corrected in Photoshop CS3. 1/125 shutter, f9.0, ISO 500, focal length 10mm.
A big thanks to Gemma for her assistance and her photographic eye. This photo of the young lady in the cotton tree is a great shot! Well done Gemma! It was pretty dark under that tree but by deliberately under-exposing the original shot Gemma allowed me to push process the image effectively. Push processing is by far, a better option to increasing ISO in many siutations like this.
![]() Since Gemma also shot this in RAW it enables me to take advantage of the red tungsten lamp light that was illuminating this tree from below. This information would have been lost if shot in Jpeg. If you'd like to learn more about using RAW and JPEG in digital photography read about it in my newsletter...and please subscribe if you like what you read. It's Free!

Ferguson Cannon Shoot
Thanks to Patto and Stacey for asking me to shoot your team photos for this year! Thanks to Sam and the girls for wonderful role-playing in the "corporate boardroom meeting" shots!
![]() The portraits were taken with a Nikon D200 and the trusty 50mm nikkor prime lens. Was having trouble with lighting this wonderfully acted boardroom scene (sunlight through the windows and fluorescent bulbs in the celieng) so I switched the lights off and nuked the place with my SB600 bouncing the ceiling and a 150 watt naked strobe to the left. There is sunlight coming from behind as well.

Hamilton Island Shoot
![]() The Wedding of Darren and Renai was truly an honour to witness and capture. I would like to thank them both as well as their family and friends for making me an honourary family member for the weekend. This not only allowed me to capture some really intimate moments but made the whole job worth more than it's weight in gold in memories alone.
Darren and Renai were kind enough to offer me a flight to beautiful whitehaven beach in a little yellow helicopter....FUN!!! The shot is taken using a Nikon D200, 10-20mm Sigma lens and SB600 speedlight in command mode. The pilot kindly offered to hold the flash on a boom for me.
